After completing a BA Hons in Ceramics with Glass Design at the University of Central England in 1998, Wendy spent three years designing for the ceramics industry both in-house and freelance before returning to study in Stoke on Trent. Here she undertook a Masters at Staffordshire University in Ceramic Design for Production which she completed in 2003.


Following her MA she won many awards for her work, such as the Jaguar cars product design award for her Hula teacup & saucer at the RBSA open exhibition, Johnson Matthey shape design competition in the Hotelware category. Her work has been featured in Elle Decoration and exhibited nationally and across Europe.


Aswell as working Freelance on various projects with major Stoke on Trent potteries, Wendy has undertaken numerous commissions including pattern design for Vista Allegre, the Clay Roofing Award’s Trophy and the Ceramic Industry Forum’s Guest Speakers Gifts.


Wendy went on to complete a PGCE at the University of Central England in 2005, following this she has spent several years teaching Art and Design in school, specialising in 3D Design and Ceramics. She has also been Visiting Tutor at Birmingham City University.


She runs Professional Development sessions for teachers upon request on the teaching of Ceramics and the preparation and management of ceramic materials and equipment.

During 2018 and 2019 Wendy worked with Edgbaston Michelin star restaurant Simpsons to produce unique handmade Petit Fours Plates and Butter Plates. She was also commissioned to make gifts for their customers to commemorate their 25th birthday.

Wendy was shortlisted in the Gift of The Year Awards 2019, Contemporary Gift Category for her Pure Cufflinks.

Wendy worked closely with Ikon Gallery, Birmingham on their large scale Schools Art Project, which culminated in an exhibition at the gallery in Summer 2018. She has since run family and adult Ceramics workshops at the gallery aswell as an adult slip-casting workshop at Heals, Mailbox, Birmingham in conjunction with Ikon Gallery.


During 2020 Wendy is running twilight teacher CPD sessions at Ikon Gallery, Birmingham aswell as working on their large scale Schools Art Project in conjunction with Creative Connections, a consortium of Birmingham schools. This will conclude with a celebratory summer exhibition at the Birmingham School of Art.

Wendy is an Artist Tutor at MAC Birmingham, teaching termly ceramics classes. She also runs her own Contemporary Ceramics practice, Wendy Tournay Ceramics.
